Riders of Rohan

The Riders of Rohan (Aka the Ida Valley Cycling group) are a group of locals enjoying the wonderful surroundings while we build our fitness and enjoy the social aspects of cycling. You can check out our page on MapMyRide.com by clicking here.

When
Rides are held every Sunday starting at 10 am from the Poolburn hall and anyone is welcome. A variety of courses are mapped out to cater for the various fitness levels.

Where
Initially rides will start from the hall, however in the future when members are happy about their fitness then other rides will be set a little further afield as we explore the local environment. Rides are published ahead of time here on mapmyride. Either Carol or Steve will stay behind at the hall with their children and will happily look after yours so that you can ride. Just bring along some snacks for the kids and suitable clothing.

What you’ll need

All Riders
- A mountain bike and helmet

- Suitable clothing for the ride that you’re doing and the day. For example, if the temp is below 15 C then please wear long johns to keep those precious knees warm. You should wear cycle pants if you have them. On your torso you’ll need either polypro or merino layers and a lightweight wind jacket. If the temp is 0 to 10 C then you’ll need at least 3 layers of polypro + an outer shell. Consider also a lightweight woolen hat to wear under your helmet if the temp is < 10 C, this really helps with keeping your head warm. I’m not trying to give you the impression that riding is a cold activity, but it can be if you’re not prepared.

- A small lightweight backpack to carry any extra clothing and food in.

Novice and fitness riders

-  One litre of water in either a bottle or camel pack.
- Food to graze on (you’re probably not going to need it for a ride that is less than an hour but it’s good to get into the habit and practice of riding and grazing). Good food options are bananas, raisins, fruit cereal bar etc (something that is carbohydrate).

Sport riders

- One to two litres of water in either bottle(s) or camel packs.
- Enough food to graze on for a ride that could take up to two hours.
