Does the Otago Central Rail Trail connect to any other trails?

Yes. The Otago Central Rail Trail connects to several other Great Rides in Central Otago, creating an extensive cycling network.

Trail Connections from Clyde Clyde is the western end of the Otago Central Rail Trail and serves as a key hub in the Central Otago trail network.

From Clyde, you can ride the Lake Dunstan Trail, which travels north alongside Lake Dunstan to Cromwell. The Lake Dunstan Trail connects directly with the Otago Central Rail Trail at Clyde.

Trail Connections from Alexandra Alexandra is located 8 kilometres from Clyde on the Rail Trail, or 12 kilometres via the river track. Alexandra is the starting point for the Roxburgh Gorge Trail.

The Roxburgh Gorge Trail connects to the Clutha Gold Trail at Roxburgh Dam.

Future Trail Connections The Kawarau Gorge Trail will open in 2026. This trail will connect Bannockburn and Cromwell with Queenstown, extending the Central Otago trail network.

Multi-Trail Itineraries Many cyclists plan multi-trail cycling holidays that combine several Great Rides. Popular options include riding the Otago Central Rail Trail, then continuing to the Roxburgh Gorge Trail and Clutha Gold Trail.

You can also ride the Lake Dunstan Trail before or after the Otago Central Rail Trail.

Day Trip Options from Clyde You can base yourself in Clyde and take day trips on three trails: the Lake Dunstan Trail, the Roxburgh Gorge Trail, and the Otago Central Rail Trail. A three-day itinerary allows you to experience all three trails as day rides.

Alexandra and Clyde Basin Loop The Alexandra and Clyde basin offers loop riding routes that include visits to Central Otago wineries.

Grand Tour Circuit The four trails—Otago Central Rail Trail, Lake Dunstan Trail, Roxburgh Gorge Trail, and Clutha Gold Trail—collectively create a network that showcases Central Otago’s diverse landscapes. These trails are designed to complement each other and form a complete circuit through the region.

We can help you plan multi-trail itineraries and provide support services for grand tour experiences across the entire Central Otago trail network.
