How safe is the Otago Central Rail Trail?

The Otago Central Rail Trail is very safe for cyclists.

Traffic Safety The trail is off-road and separated from motor vehicles, so you do not need to worry about traffic for most of your ride. There are some road crossings along the trail where you need to take care, but you are well away from cars for most of the route.

Trail Surface The gravel path is well-maintained and not technically difficult. The surface varies along the length of the trail because different regional materials were used to cover the original railway ballast.

Weather Safety You must be prepared for weather changes. Central Otago can have extreme temperatures, including hot sun, sudden cold snaps, and strong winds. You should carry sufficient water, wear sunscreen and a helmet, and bring warm layers or a rain jacket.

Communication Cell phone reception is available in many parts of the trail, but coverage can be unreliable in remote stretches such as Poolburn Gorge. We recommend you ride with a companion or inform someone of your daily riding plan.

Satellite communication systems like OneNZ Starlink allow you to send messages from anywhere you can see the sky.

Equipment If you have a basic bike repair kit, a phone, and take sensible precautions, the Rail Trail is a very enjoyable and safe ride.
