The Rail Trail offers a wonderfully scenic and historic journey. Highlights include cycling through the Poolburn Gorge with its two long tunnels and the impressive Poolburn Viaduct, crossing old railway bridges over river gorges, and traversing the wide open Maniototo plain with mountains on the horizon. You’ll gain an appreciation of the size of our solar system as well with the interplanetary trail installations along the way. All to scale given their relative position to the Sun (Ranfurly)
Along the way, you’ll pass relics of Otago’s gold-mining and railway history – from old stone railway stations and engineering feats to historic towns like Clyde and Naseby (a short detour from the trail).
You’ll be journeying along a pathway that predates the European settlers and the railway. The Maori moved into Central Otago during the warmer months to hunt, gather and trade. Some used it as a conduit to the west coast in search of Pounamu (greenstone).
Information boards along the route share stories about the area’s heritage. The natural beauty is equally memorable: you’ll see schist rock formations, big Central Otago skies, farmland with grazing sheep and cattle, and maybe even wildlife like rabbits or hawks. In the evenings, you’ll be able to star gaze and we’re sure you’ll be surprised by the clarity and depth of that experience. There is little light pollution in our region so the night sky really “pops”.
Each section of the trail has its own charm, and the gentle pace allows you to really soak in the quiet, remote atmosphere of the countryside.
