You’ll find excellent food and drink options in nearly every town along the Otago Central Rail Trail. In fact, a common comment from riders is that the food is too good – you just want to try everything! Our Otago Rail Trail Trip Notes App includes all of the food and drink providers on the trail.
Key stops include cafés, historic pubs, bakeries, general stores, and restaurants offering everything from famous pies and baking to local lamb dishes and craft beer. Popular spots include Olivers Restaurant and The Merchant of Clyde in Clyde, Muddy Creek Cafe in Omakau, Gilchrist’s Oturehua Store and the Oturehua Railway Hotel, Wedderburn Tavern, and Maniototo Cafe in Ranfurly.
Important to know:
- Book ahead for dinner – Our small country towns aren’t used to walk-in customers like city restaurants. Make a booking so they’re expecting you and you won’t go hungry.
- Opening hours vary – Hours can change, especially during holiday periods. It’s best to confirm directly with the venue.
- Carry water and snacks – Some stretches between towns can be 20-30km, so always have supplies with you.
