Comfortable cycling clothes are the starting point, but layering is the key to staying comfortable on the Otago Rail Trail. Central Otago’s weather is generally very predictable, but it can change quickly, so wear or carry:
- A light waterproof/windproof jacket
- A warm mid-layer (fleece or wool) for cool mornings or evenings
- A hat or beanie and gloves if it might get cold
- Sunglasses and a sunhat, as the Central Otago sun can be intense
You’ll also need to wear a helmet, which is required by law in New Zealand.
What else should I bring?
Clothing is just part of the picture. Also pack:
- Sunscreen — the UV in Central Otago is no joke
- Water and snacks — carry plenty, especially in summer, as services between towns are limited. A sports drink alongside water helps you absorb more fluid on hot days
- A head torch or bike light — the trail has several unlit tunnels, including the 229 m Poolburn Tunnel. Our hire bikes come with lights fitted
- A puncture repair kit — our hire bikes come with one. You do need to be able to change a flat tyre, as we can’t drive out to assist you. Some sections are remote and you could be 75 km from a depot
- Personal items — a basic first aid kit, insect repellent (summer evenings), hand sanitiser, and a charged mobile phone
- Toilet paper and hand sanitiser — trail toilets are long drops and don’t supply paper
