The Otago Central Rail Trail Passport is an interactive souvenir booklet priced at $15 that tells the history of each former railway station site along the 152km trail. It’s more than just a keepsake – it’s your opportunity to give back to the trail, which is free to ride.
How it works: At each of the historic station sites along the trail, you’ll find a red-painted replica of a New Zealand Railways Department emergency phone box. Inside is a sketch that matches a sticker in your Passport. You collect and place the stickers in the corresponding station pages as you ride, creating a wonderful record of your journey.
Where the money goes: All proceeds from Passport sales go directly to the Otago Central Rail Trail Charitable Trust for ongoing trail enhancements, including:
- Relocating and restoring old railway buildings
- Building Ganger Shed shelters with information boards
- Installing picnic tables, seating, and native plantings
- Completing the Interplanetary Solar System (including the Sun at Ranfurly)
- Developing Rail Tales educational resources
- Future landscape improvements and heritage projects
