What kind of gear should I pack or carry on the Otago Central Rail Trail?

Like any outdoor activity in New Zealand, it’s important to be prepared for a change in the weather and for minor emergencies while cycling. Consider packing the following when riding the Otago Rail Trail:

  • Water and snacks: Carry plenty of water (especially in summer) and some high-energy snacks, since services between towns are limited. In the summer, a sports drink is a good complement to water as it will help you absorb more fluid.
  • Clothing layers: Central Otago’s weather is generally very predictable, but it can change quickly. Wear or carry layered clothing – a light waterproof/windproof jacket, a warm mid-layer (fleece or wool) for cool mornings or evenings, and comfortable cycling clothes. Don’t forget a hat or beanie and gloves if it might get cold.
  • Sun protection: The sun can be intense. Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and a sunhat.
  • Head torch or bike light: The Rail Trail has several unlit tunnels (such as the 229 m Poolburn Tunnel). A small headlamp or bicycle light is very useful (and adds visibility if you happen to be out at dusk). Our hire bikes come with lights on them.
  • Bike repair kit: Include a spare tube, tire levers, pump, and a basic multi-tool. Flats are infrequent on the well-graded gravel, but it’s wise to be prepared. Some sections are remote, so you should be able to handle a minor repair or puncture. Our hire bikes come with puncture repair kits and you do need to be able to change a flat as we cannot drive out to assist you. At times you might be 75km from a depot, in a remote spot etc.
  • Personal items: A basic first aid kit, hand sanitizer, insect repellent (for summer evenings), and a charged mobile phone are good to have. And of course, always wear a helmet – it’s required by law in New Zealand and essential for your safety.
  • Toilet paper and hand sanitizer: The on trail toilets are long drops and you need your own paper and a means for washing your hands.
