We provide several map options to help you navigate the trail:
Interactive GPS Map – Our Otago Rail Trail Maps page features an interactive Ride with GPS map showing the full elevation profile, total climb, exact distances between waypoints, and gradients. You can zoom in and explore the entire 152km route with detailed topography.
Downloadable PDF Map – Download a high-resolution printable PDF map that’s perfect for offline reference when phone coverage is limited. We also provide a paper copy during your itinerary briefing.
Free Trip Notes App – For the most practical on-trail navigation, download our free Otago Central Rail Trail Trip Notes App. The app works on your phone and includes section-by-section details like distances between locations, where to find food and water, toilet locations, important notices about operating hours, and what to expect along each part of the trail.
The interactive map is best viewed on desktop for full functionality, while the app is designed specifically for use on your phone while riding. Both are completely free and complement each other – use the interactive map for trip planning and the app during your ride.
