Confident, fit cyclists comfortable on Grade 2-3 trail. The gorge includes a 13 km backcountry section – no easy exit once you’re in. Helmets mandatory. E-bikes must be fully charged. Keep left – two-way trail throughout. Your own bike must be in good working order and suitable for Grade 2-3 trail. Check tyres, brakes and gears before your trip and carry a puncture and chain repair kit.

Ride your own bike through the Kawarau Gorge from Gibbston to Bannockburn – one of Central Otago’s most dramatic cycling routes. Suspension bridges, turquoise water and gorge views throughout.

  • 9:00 am – Depot opens. Arrive with your bike. Load bikes onto trailer
  • 10:00 am -Depart for Gibbston Valley.
  • 10:30 am – Arrive Gibbston Valley. Unload and start riding.
  • Ride back to Bannockburn through the gorge
  • Seat and bike on shuttle
  • Southern Lakes Trail Trust train maintenance contribution
