Food, Wine & Hospitality on the Otago Central Rail Trail

At SheBikesHeBikes, we believe the Otago Central Rail Trail is more than just a bike ride, it’s an experience that feeds your soul and your stomach. From iconic country pubs to small village cafés, the journey is packed with flavours. You’ll find more than just fuel for your legs; you’ll discover warm welcomes, local delicacies, and unforgettable moments around every meal.

Midday Magic: Where to Eat for Lunch

There’s something special about rolling into a quiet township after a morning of riding and finding a café or hotel serving up exactly what you didn’t know you were craving. The Rail Trail is dotted with spots that deliver hearty food, roasted coffee, and some “adult” Fanta’s. The food providers love to use locally sourced produce where they can and they’re always right behind any sort of “food” competition like Eat, Taste Central. Some have even taken national awards… and the wine certainly has.

Expect to see:

  • Golden-crusted pies made fresh that morning
  • Rich espresso or a strong flat white (very necessary!)
  • Baking trays full of inviting slices, scones and muffins.
  • Hearty sandwiches, rolls, seasonal salads, and lunch menus that surprise with their quality.

These stops aren’t just about the food, they’re the heart of the Rail Trail’s hospitality, often run by locals who are quick with a story or trail tip. Many riders say lunch becomes a highlight of the day, not just a pit stop.

Evening Eats: Country Pubs & Local Fare

After a satisfying day on the trail, nothing beats the comfort of a country pub meal. You’ll know you’ve found the real deal when you spot a line of muddy boots at the door and the fire roaring inside (or the garden buzzing in summer). A refreshing Central Otago craft beer or wine is always available to add another dimension as you try something different.

These pubs are more than eateries, they’re social hubs where you can relax, share stories with fellow cyclists, and wind down in style. Best of all, you’ll have a chance to engage with the locals who are never short of a story or two. We once had a rider ask if we were transporting round hired actors, because the farmer at the bar apparently looked the same as the farmer at the next bar, with his jug of beer and 7 ounce glass

Make sure you book

Here’s a handy tip, often a town only has one evening meal provider.  Bookings will fill up fast and once they are at capacity, they will have to turn bookings down. So make use of our food guide and make your booking well in advance. You’ll know best what works for you as far as timing, budget etc. so we leave this up to you. Choice is important so we leave the choosing to you.

Need something special

Got a food allergy, prefer vegetarian or vegan? Not a problem, the cafe’s and pubs are all over it for you. Having catered to ten’s of thousands before you, they’ve got you covered. Need a cake for an on trail birthday, let them know ahead of time and they’ll sort it.

Come Hungry. Leave Happy.

When you ride the Otago Central Rail Trail with Shebikeshebikes, you’re not just pedalling through epic landscapes, you’re tasting your way through them. The food, the wine, the people, each plays a role in making your journey extraordinary. Remember, a cycling holiday with us is way more than just a bike ride.
