Why just ride the trail when you can arrive in style?
The Taieri Gorge Railway is one of New Zealand’s great heritage train journeys, departing from Dunedin’s magnificent Victorian railway station and winding inland through dramatic gorges, over historic viaducts, through incredibly tight tunnels. It then emerges into the big open skies of Central Otago. It’s spectacular scenery you simply can’t see any other way.
The train drops you at Pukerangi, from where a short shuttle connects to Middlemarch, the eastern gateway to the Otago Central Rail Trail. From there, the trail is all yours.
It’s the perfect “rails to trails” combination: let the train carry you in, then saddle up and pedal your way through 152km of golden Central Otago landscape all the way to Clyde.
A word of planning advice, the train doesn’t run every day and arrives in Pukerangi around midday, so it suits a four- or five-day ride best. Talk to us when you book and we’ll help build your itinerary around it.
Ready to make it happen? Get in touch with the SheBikesHeBikes Otago Rail Trail team and we’ll sort the bikes, luggage transfers, and transport. You just enjoy the ride.
