The Trail: Designed to Be Easy

The Otago Central Rail Trail follows the old railway line between Clyde and Middlemarch, stretching 152 km through Central Otago’s scenic countryside. Because it was originally built for trains, the gradient is never steeper than 1:50, meaning it’s almost entirely flat or gently sloping. There are no sharp climbs, and the terrain is made up of compacted gravel – ideal for hybrid bikes, mountain bikes, and e-bikes. It’s lovely that this route could be repurposed and that it’s original use made it perfect for becoming a cycling trail.

You Don’t Need to Be Super Fit – Just Saddle-Ready

Fitness isn’t a barrier, but time in the saddle matters. Most people doing our multi-day Otago Rail Trail packages ride between 30 to 50km per day, which takes around 3 to 5 hours of gentle riding. That means:

  • You don’t need serious cardiovascular or muscular fitness.
  • What matters more is comfort while riding, particularly how your body handles sitting on a bike for several hours a day.

Top Tip: The biggest physical challenge for most riders is saddle fatigue, not heart rate. Wearing proper cycling shorts with padding can make a huge difference to your comfort, especially over 3+ days. If you love your own bikes saddle at home, bring it along and we’ll happily put it on your hire bike for you.

E-Bikes Make It Even Easier

If you’re worried about fitness – or just want to enjoy the ride with less physical strain, E-Bikes are a game-changer. With pedal-assist technology, you’ll glide along the trail with minimal effort, even on the longer days. E-bikes reduce the need for both cardiovascular and muscular endurance, and they’re a great option for:

  • Older riders
  • Those recovering from injury
  • Mixed-ability groups (so everyone “keeps up”)
  • Anyone who wants a more leisurely experience

All our Otago Rail Trail cycling tour packages offer E-bike upgrades, and we’ll ensure you’re fitted with the right setup for your height and comfort.

Who Can Ride the Otago Rail Trail?

The trail is suitable for:

  • Families with kids
  • Seniors
  • Casual riders
  • Groups with mixed fitness levels

As long as you can balance on a bike, ride for a few hours at a time, and enjoy being outdoors, you’re likely fit enough to enjoy the full experience. It’s very safe and we provide helpful information about gear that you need to bring to keep you safe and enhance your comfort.

How to Prepare If You’re Not Sure

If you’re not used to riding regularly, here are a few simple ways to prepare in the weeks leading up to your trip:

  • Go for 2 to 3 short bike rides each week (30 to 60 minutes). Yes, you can do that on the exercycle and a spin class is even better.
  • Practice riding on gravel or trails if possible, but it’s not imperative.
  • Invest in padded cycling shorts. If you don’t have any then check out our super value cycling starter packs in our shop that include shorts, gloves and a reusable souvenir drink bottle.
  • Adjust your seat height and posture for comfort. We’ll help you with that.
  • Try out an E-bike rental locally if you’re considering using one on the trail

Even a small amount of preparation will improve your confidence and enjoyment, especially on the second or third day of a multi-day ride.

Our Support Makes It Even Easier

When you book with SheBikesHeBikes, you’re not going it alone. All our Otago Rail Trail package tours include:

  • Luggage transfers (so you’re not riding with a heavy pack)
  • Accommodation to fit your budget and requirements each night
  • Bike hire with properly fitted bike
  • Optional E-bike upgrades
  • Customisable daily distances based on your comfort and fitness. We’ll talk you through your itinerary and adjust it to suit your ability level.

Final Word: It’s About the Journey, Not the Gym

You don’t need to be an athlete to ride the Otago Rail Trail. The focus is on soaking up the scenery, enjoying the local hospitality, and riding at your own pace – not racing to the finish (unless that’s your thing). And with E-Bikes, full support, and suitable daily distances, almost anyone can do it.

So whether you’re a casual rider or haven’t been on a bike in years, we’ll make sure your Otago Rail Trail adventure is enjoyable, comfortable, and completely achievable.
