The Otago Central Rail Trail has just been featured in Momentum Magazine’s roundup of the world’s most beautiful rail-trails for cyclists, joining iconic routes like Norway’s Rallarvegen, Ireland’s Waterford Greenway, and the Alpe Adria Radweg spanning the Austrian Alps to Italy.
The magazine highlights what locals already know: the 150km trail through Central Otago is a “textbook example of how rail-trails can revive rural regions,” with former farming towns now hosting cafés and lodges, easy gradients ideal for all abilities, and small towns linked by wide valleys and historic stone bridges.
But here’s the ironic timing: just as this international recognition lands, we as trail operators, recently gathered in Oturehua, (one of those very small towns along the route) – for a strategic workshop focused on taking the trail from its current standing to firmly world-class status.
What Makes It Special Now
New Zealand embraced rail-trail conversions early, and the Otago Central Rail Trail remains the country’s most famous example. The route’s success isn’t just about cycling infrastructure, it’s about rural revitalization. The trail has breathed new life into communities that might otherwise have faded after the trains stopped running.
